#givefirst

give before you get

" In order to give before you get, we must adopt a philosophy of helping others without an expectation of what we are going to get back. It’s not altruistic - we do expect to get things in return - but we don’t set up the relationship to be a transactional one. " - Brad Feld

#givefirst

This is our motto since 2015. But it´s not ours to keep, its ours to spread. And we would like to make it yours.

Spread #givefirst.

Brad Feld (@bfeld) is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist. In a LinkedIn article from 31 December 2012, Brad encouraged everyone to adopt one of his deeply held beliefs, that of “give before you get.” In order to give before you get, we must adopt a philosophy of helping others without an expectation of what we are going to get back. It’s not altruistic - we do expect to get things in return - but we don’t set up the relationship to be a transactional one. For Brad that applies also to our private life, that act of giving without expectations makes us happy, and we can and should live a happy life.

Simon Sinek (@simonsinek) is a British-American author, motivational speaker and organizational consultant. In his presentation “Why Leaders Eat Last” he talks about the impact of hormones in our body and in our lives as human beings. The hormone Oxytocin as a huge impact in our lives and we get it from the act of giving, of helping others.

Mark Suster (@msuster) is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist. In an Ink Magazine article from 2013, Mark also told as about this philosophy and tells us that we live in a world of asking. Everybody is asking for something, networking as come to an asking event instead of an investment in creating and maintaining relationships.

Recently I meet someone that went to TechStars and was amazed by their “#GiveFirst” philosophy. Maybe it’s not a coincidence that Mark Suster and Brad Felt are mentors in TechStars. Techstars promotes the concept of giving without expecting a transactional return. It’s the first point in Techstars Code of Conduct: “We give first.”

As Brad told in 2012, consider adopting a give before you get approach. It might surprise you what you’ll get!
